Brussels, Belgium, May 8, 2025 –King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, H.E. Ban Ki-moon, the President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) met for an official lunch to advance their shared visions on sustainable development and to forge alliances for continued climate action. The event occurred alongside meetings with the Belgium Ministry of Mobility, Climate and Ecological Transition, the Special Envoy for Climate and Environment and Belgium’s Development Agency, the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO), and ENABEL, to explore GGGI-Belgium cooperation.  

“I would like to share my heartfelt appreciation to Their Royal Highnesses King Philippe and Queen Mathilde and the Government of Belgium for the unrelenting push for decisive global climate action,” H. E. Ban Ki-moon said. “During these times of uncertainty around the world, we need more this type of unity, intergenerational responsibility, and collective commitment to address the climate crisis for a better future for humanity and our planet,” he said. 

Belgium already plays an active role in sustainable development and climate action around the world. Not only has the country led weight to negotiations on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, but also advanced international cooperation which contributed significantly to climate adaptation programs in support of vulnerable communities including in Least Developed Countries.  

GGGI and the Belgium Government will continue working toward building cooperation recognizing the shared goals on climate and sustainable development.

반기문 GGGI 총회 의장, 벨기에 국왕 및 왕비와 면담 – 기후행동 및 지속가능발전 협력 논의 

벨기에 브뤼셀, 2025년 5월 8일 – 글로벌녹색성장기구(GGGI) 총회 의장이자 이사회 의장인 반기문 전 유엔 사무총장이 벨기에 필립 국왕(Philippe)과 마틸드 왕비(Mathilde)와 공식 오찬을 갖고, 지속가능발전이라는 공동 비전과 기후위기 대응을 위한 연대를 강화하는 방안을 논의했다. 이번 방문은 벨기에 연방정부의 이동성·기후·생태전환부, 기후·환경 특사, 벨기에 개발청(ENABEL), 벨기에 개발금융공사(BIO) 등과의 면담이 함께 진행되었으며, GGGI–벨기에 간 협력 가능성을 모색하는 계기가 되었다. 

반기문 의장은 “기후위기에 대한 결단력 있는 국제사회의 대응을 위해 지속적으로 목소리를 내주신 필리프 국왕 폐하와 마틸드 왕비 폐하, 그리고 벨기에 정부에 깊이 감사드린다”며, “전 세계가 불확실성에 직면한 이 시점에, 기후위기 대응을 위한 연대와 세대 간 책임, 집단적 의지야말로 인류와 지구의 미래를 위한 필수 조건”이라고 강조했다. 

벨기에는 이미 지속가능발전 및 기후행동 분야에서 활발한 국제적 역할을 수행하고 있다. 글로벌 해양조약 (BBNJ) 협정 관련 협상에서의 리더십뿐 아니라, 최빈국 등 기후 취약 커뮤니티를 대상으로 한 기후 적응 프로그램 지원 등의 국제 협력에도 적극적으로 참여해 왔다. 

GGGI와 벨기에 정부는 기후대응 및 지속가능발전이라는 공동의 목표를 바탕으로 향후 실질적인 협력을 이어갈 예정이다.
