[SEI] An energy sector roadmap to net zero emissions for Lao PDR |
---|---|
Category | |
Lao PDR aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. This goal requires the country to transform its energy sector, which currently faces challenges from its dependence on hydropower, which is growing vulnerable to climate variability and water shortages, as well as fossil fuels for industry and transport. On the other hand, Lao PDR contains great renewable energy potential, with opportunities for growth in wind, solar and biomass energy that can allow the country to diversify its energy mix and achieve energy resilience amid a shifting climate. The ASEAN Centre for Energy used SEI’s flagship energy modelling tools, LEAP and NEMO, as well as support from SEI experts to produce “An Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions for Lao PDR,” which compares the effects of the status quo energy sector to one that achieves the net-zero goal by 2050. The report finds that he net-zero target can be realized through improvements in energy efficiency, increased use of solar and biomass energy, and large-scale electrification, among other measures. With detailed recommendations, this roadmap gives a comprehensive framework to guide policymakers, stakeholders and investors toward achieving net zero in Lao PDR.
