이산화탄소’ 먹고, 전기·수소 만드는 기술의 진화
- 물에 녹인 이산화탄소로 쉬운 화학반응 유도, 기후변화 대응 기대
□ 울산과학기술원(UNIST, 총장 정무영) 에너지 및 화학공학부 김건태 교수팀은 이산화탄소를 사용해, 전기와 수소를 생산하는 ‘수계* 금속(아연, 알루미늄)-이산화탄소 시스템(Aqueous Zn or Al–CO₂System)’을 개발했다.
* 수계(Aqueous): 물 기반의 전해질을 사용했다는 의미. 이 시스템에서는 물에 수산화칼륨이나 수산화나트륨 등을 미량 녹여 전해질로 사용함
◦ 이 시스템은 물에 녹인 이산화탄소를 활용해 작동하는 일종의전지인데, 전기화학 반응 과정에서 기후변화의 주범인 이산화탄소는 제거되고 전기와 수소가 만들어지는 방식이다.
□ 지구온난화 등 기후변화 문제가 심각해짐에 따라 이산화탄소를 저감하기 위해 전세계적으로 이산화탄소를 포집·활용·저장하는 기술(CCUS)* 개발이 활발히 진행되고 있다.
* CCUS(CO2 Capture, Utilization and Sequestration) 산업시설 등에서 나오는 이산화탄소를 포집, 저장하는 기술과 이산화탄소를 다른 유용한 물질로 변환하는 기술 포함
◦ 그런데 기체상태의 이산화탄소는 화학적으로 매우 안정적인 상태라서, 그 결합을 끊고 다른 물질로 변환하기 어려워, 세계 각 국은 효율적으로 이산화탄소를 전환하기 위한 연구에 집중하는 상황이다.
□ 이번 연구는 이산화탄소를 물에 녹이면 손쉽게 다른 물질로 전환할 수 있다는 점에 착안했다.이산화탄소가 물에 녹게 되면, 그 물은 수소이온(H⁺)이 많아져 산성을 띠는 물이 되면서,전자(electron)들이 이동하면서 전기 에너지가 만들어지는 것이다.
* 이 시스템은 연료전지처럼 음극(아연, 알루미늄 금속)과 분리막, 양극(촉매)으로 구성. 다른 전지와 달리 촉매가 물속에 담겨 있으며, 음극과 도선으로 연결됨.
◦ 전기가 만들어지는 과정에서 이산화탄소는 다른 물질(탄산수소칼륨)로 변환되는데 이 때 전환 효율은 57% 혹은 그 이상이 된다. 또한, 그 과정에서 수소도 생산되기 때문에 일석이조의 효과를 거둘 수 있다.

□ ‘이산화탄소’를 제거하는 동시에 ‘전기’를 생산하여 ‘수소’까지 얻는 이번 기술은 지난해 본 연구팀이 공개한 ‘나트륨 금속–이산화탄소 시스템(Hybrid Na-CO₂system)’보다 효율성과 안전성이 크게 향상되었다.
◦ 기존보다 저렴한 전극(금속)과 분리막으로 바꿔 가격을 낮추었을 뿐만 아니라, 폭발위험이 없어 안전하며 전기 출력과 수소 생산 속도도 크게 높아졌다.
□ 김건태 UNIST 에너지 및 화학공학부 교수는 “이 기술은 이산화탄소를 더 빠르고 값싸게 줄이면서 수소와 전기를 생산할 수 있는 활용성 높은 세계 최초 기술”이라며 “실증 연구 수준에 빠르게 도달한 만큼 상용화 가능성도 높을 것으로 기대한다.”고 밝혔다.
□ 과학기술정보통신부는 본 연구결과가 국제적인 학술지인 앙게반테 케미(Angewandte Chemie)에 게재(’19.5.22.)됐으며, 과기정통부 기후변화 대응 기술 개발사업의 ‘Korea CCS 2020’ 사업의 지원을 받아 수행됐다고 밝혔다.
