[부르키나파소] Food and Equipment to Strengthen Climate Resilience

Kaya, Burkina Faso – July 23, 2025 – As part of the implementation of the Building Resilience on the Kaya-Dori axis Project, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have provided substantial humanitarian support to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host families in the Centre-North region of Burkina Faso.

The initiative was carried out in close collaboration with the local authorities of the Centre-North region and the local implementing partner, the Alliance Technique d’Assistance au Développement (ATAD). It aims to address the immediate food needs of 5,379 IDPs and host families. With this latest food distribution, the project has successfully reached its goal of supporting over 5,000 individuals across 750 households over three years.

Beyond food assistance, this intervention seeks to reduce tensions over access to natural resources and promote the economic empowerment of the beneficiary populations. This support includes the distribution of essential household items, agricultural equipment, and seeds, and livestock.

A total of 750 food kits were distributed, consisting of:

  • 26 tons of rice
  • 22 tons of maize
  • 15 tons of beans
  • 3,750 liters of cooking oil
  • 750 kilograms of salt

Additional essential items distributed include:

  • 521 improved cookstoves designed to reduce wood and charcoal consumption
  • 250 basic household kits

Furthermore, 200 professional kits covering 16 trades were delivered to support socio-economic integration. These kits include:

  • Agricultural tools (wheelbarrows, hoes, pitchforks, tarpaulins, watering cans)
  • 25 solar-powered irrigation systems
  • Seeds (cowpea, sorghum, and vegetable crops)
  • Livestock for small ruminant fattening and breeding

This support in the form of food and equipment for IDPs and host families is part of a well-considered strategy to promote self-reliance and dignity among displaced persons, while also protecting natural resources,” said Dethie Soumare Ndiaye, GGGI’s Country Representative in Burkina Faso.Local authorities welcomed the initiative, highlighting its tangible impact on the living conditions of beneficiaries and called for the responsible and sustainable management of the assistance provided.

This project demonstrates the capacity of GGGI and KOICA to mobilize integrated and sustainable solutions, combining humanitarian aid, social inclusion, and climate action, in alignment with the Government of Burkina Faso’s priorities amid a complex crisis.

The day after the food and equipment distribution, the project’s steering committee convened to assess progress made and plan the next phase, considering lessons learned, environmental needs, and the specific concerns of IDPs.
