Title Samoa Workshop held in Korea

24 May 2024 - 12:00 PM

On May 21-23, 2024, the CTCN Pacific Office in Songdo was delighted to host a Samoa delegation for a technical assistance workshop focused on REDD+ readiness as part of fighting climate change.

The CTCN has collaborated with the National Institute of Green Technology (NIGT), the implementing partner of the Samoa technical assistance (TA), to organise a final workshop in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Samoa (the National Designated Entity, NDE).

The CTCN project aimed to develop a framework and methodology to estimate the carbon sink in the forestry sector in Samoa. During the 3-day workshop, attendees engaged in discussions about project progress, forest mapping, carbon sink potential, and Samoa's REDD+ framework.

Experts from Korea and Samoa shared insights on how various technologies  are used for forest management. Important connections were made and the delegation also visited the G-Tower in Songdo, Incheon, where they met with the CTCN Liaison Office and the Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The latter briefed the delegation on the GCF's portfolio for Samoa and the new Readiness strategy.

The Delegation also met with NIGT to discuss Samoa’s TA project pipeline for 2024 and CTCN’s multi-country TA windows, with keen interest expressed in a feasibility study of green hydrogen and formulating a net metering policy. A series of seminars were held to better understand forest carbon management and policies in Pacific island countries, including REDD+ MRV assessments and climate information services for resilient development planning. The REDD+ framework for the country is close to being finalized.

All in all, it was a very fruitful visit by the Samoa delegation.
