[GGGI] GGGI, CCRS partner to advance green growth in the Sahel Region

Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, November 28, 2024 – The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Climate Commission for the Sahel Region (CCRS) signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening partnership and collaboration on actions that support the transition to green growth in the Sahel Region.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed today in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, provides a framework for cooperation between GGGI and CCRS in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Activities that will be undertaken as part of this partnership include (i) strengthening regional, national, and local planning frameworks for financing and institutionalizing green and inclusive growth, (ii) facilitating access to climate finance and green investment, (iii) strengthening evidence-based knowledge sharing on green growth and the adoption of green, climate-friendly technologies and (iv)supporting sustainable development in the Sahel Region.

Additionally, both parties have agreed to contribute to the implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, particularly its Climate Agenda in the Sahel Region, as well as the Climate Investment Plan for the Sahel Region (PIC-RS).

“The Sahel region faces increasing desertification, frequent droughts, erratic rainfalls and rising temperatures. We are happy to partner with GGGI and to work together on solutions that drive climate action in this region, strengthen climate resilience, and accelerate the transition to a green economy,” said Mr. Issifi Boureima, CCRS Executive Secretary.

“The collaboration between the Climate Commission for the Sahel Region (CCRS) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) will be extremely beneficial, given the shared objectives of supporting the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement across the Sahel region. The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding marks an important step towards enhancing climate action and sustainable development in Burkina Faso, aligning with GGGI’s goals of supporting green growth and environmental resilience,” said Dethie S. Ndiaye, GGGI Country Representative in Burkina Faso.

Dr. Malle Fofana, GGGI’s Regional Director and Head of Programs for Africa, noted: “Climate finance and green investment are critical to driving climate action, particularly in the most climate-vulnerable regions. Through this collaboration, we believe that GGGI and CCRS will make decisive actions that strengthen climate resilience, improve food security, and enhance adaptation and mitigation actions in the Sahel Region.”
