[GGGI] Fostering Private Sector Partnerships: Paving the Way for Greater Climate Finance in Lesotho |
---|---|
MASERU, LESOTHO, August 26, 2024—With the support of Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and in partnership with the African Union Commission, the Lesotho Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Lesotho, will conduct a critical capacity-building workshop from August 26 to 28, 2024, at Avani Lesotho. This workshop aims to enhance the private sector’s understanding and engagement with climate finance to lead the country’s green development efforts. Lesotho faces numerous challenges, including high unemployment and severe environmental issues like drought, land degradation, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity, exacerbated by climate change. The country’s future resilience depends on effective climate finance and green investments, particularly from the private sector. This three-day workshop is designed to enhance the private sector’s knowledge and skills in climate finance and introduce them to innovative financial instruments such as climate bonds and carbon markets. Through practical case studies and expert-led sessions, participants will learn how to mobilize resources at scale and contribute to Lesotho’s sustainable development goals. “Climate finance is more than just funding projects; it is about empowering the private sector to take bold steps towards sustainability. Engaging the private sector is of utmost importance for all stakeholders to effectively address climate challenges. Therefore, this capacity-enhancing workshop serves as a vital platform for fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge, insights, and strategies to advance climate finance initiatives specifically tailored to Lesotho’s unique climate needs, “said Dr. Malle Fofana, Regional Director and Head of Program for GGGI Regional Africa Office. With the participation of 25 representatives from the private sector, the workshop will provide invaluable insights that will enhance their ability to access and manage climate finance effectively. This initiative underscores GAC, AUC, GGGI and the country’s Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture’s commitment to building a greener, more resilient Lesotho. This workshop is part of the AU’s Green Recovery Action Plan (AU-GRAP) programme launched in 2022 to tackle the combined challenges of COVID-19 recovery and climate change. AU-GRAP aims to promote green initiatives, enhance climate resilience, and support AU member states in strengthening finance and investment in sustainable projects—driving a green economic transformation that depends on the backing of both public and private investors. About the Transformative Climate Finance Program of the African Union Green Recovery Action Plan (TCFP AU-GRAP) The Africa Union Commission, in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute, the Africa Capacity Building Foundation, and Canada’s support, kicked off the first phase of AU-GRAP implementation with the first cohort involving seven AU Member States (Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, and Zambia) and three Regional Economic Communities (East African Community, Common Market for East and Southern Africa and Southern Africa Development Community). ———————————
